Glenrothes Cinema to re-open as the “KINO”

The Silver Screen is set to return to Glenrothes. Glenrothes Cinema is to re-open as Kino Cinema, Glenrothes nearly 12 years after it last screened a movie.  The two screen cinema at the Kingdom Centre closed in 1998 because of a lack of business. Graeme Reekie is the man behind the return of the cinema experience to Glenrothes

He explained his plans: “We hope to open in Mid-October. We just looked at the Cinema and noticed there is nothing to do in Glenrothes, so why not re-open it? We got the lease and it’s currently getting fully renovated. I hope it’s successful and provides what people here want. It will give them a unique cinema experience instead of the mass cinema thing.  There will be a kids’ club and cult nights, but generally it will be the big new releases including 3-D films.”

The news comes after the success of the Glenrothes Community Cinema which started in the Rothes Halls last November and shows two films a month.

Mr. Reekie believes their work has shown that there is enough interest in Glenrothes for the return of blockbuster movies.

I am aware of the Community Cinema and we will be happy to facilitate them. They have done a great job and it has certainly shown there is a need for a cinema here, but we need a commercial cinema in Glenrothes. I’m looking forward to getting started

Glenrothes Film Festival’s comment

This is brilliant news for Glenrothes, especially coming just as we’re promoting the first Glenrothes Film Festival. The Kino will open shortly after the Festival on October 9th, and we’ll be giving our full support to Graeme’s venture.

The opening of Kino in October will be the second cinema “resurrection” this year in Fife. Leven Community Cinema recently re-opened the Regent in Leven, and are now screening films seven days a week, staffed entirely by community volunteers. Graeme was involved in that project too, as projectionist.

Pete Rabjohns said: “I can remember being part of the BFFS team that helped them get started, in a church hall. What Frank and his team have since achieved, in such a short time, with community volunteers is frankly astounding.”

We would urge the citizens of Glenrothes to support the new cinema. Remember that this is a commercial venture and can only survive if it makes a profit, so your support is vital. Use it – Don’t lose it!
